Neechka: An Orphaned BearThe most famous bear named "Winnipeg" who was bought near Lake Superior and given to the London Zoo. Winnipeg inspired Mr. Milne to write the tales of Winnie-the-Pooh for his son Christopher.

The "Teddy" bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt who refused to shoot a bear.

The term "Bear Market" comes from the proverb "to sell the bearskin before catching the bear".

Bears hibernate throughout the winter months in dens, living off their body fat without losing muscle and bone mass. Bear cubs are born in January or February and are not much bigger than a chipmunk. Bears emerge from their dens groggy and their appetites gradually increase. They eat grasses, and other early sprouting greens. It is not until July when the berries ripen that they start putting on weight, and by November they have really fattened up for the winter sleep by eating acorns and nuts.

Bears have VERY long tongues specially designed to wrap around a branch like a straw and to suck all the berries into its mouth.
