The past year has been very difficult for Ms. Tournay. Then on February 15th, 2010,long time friend and employee of the Sanctuary, Tony Grant resigned and left Ms. Tournay and his beloved Subira with no notice whatsoever. In March of 2010 Ms. Tournay fell ill and was hospitalized for a number of days. Since that time Ms. Tournay has been adamant of her desire to have “Tony back” and the Sanctuary to be run as it had in the past. It is understandably difficult for Ms. Tournay to accept that the days of holding baby skunks and beavers in her lap for visitors
of the Sanctuary to adore and cuddle are gone. No longer is the public permitted to walk through the barn to feed baby moose and deer as they have been allowed to do so often in the past. Those days are gone! As a result, Ms. Tournay is a very unhappy lady. We at AVWS find this so very sad and unfortunate. That such a fine woman who has contributed such an great deal to the world of animal rehabilitation should find herself feeling isolated and so very angry is a shame. It is our greatest wish that Ms. Tournay find happiness, contentment and real joy in her new home. We look forward to having Ms. Tournay visit the Sanctuary whenever she so desires so that she can personally bare witness to the remarkable work that is being done here at AVWS. The work she started 40 years ago continues and shall continue.

Audrey's 80th Birthday a Huge Success!
What a Day!
On Saturday Apr 10th, 2010 Audrey Tournay was surrounded by well wishers and supporters in celebration of her 80th birthday. A good time was had by all. Audrey greeted one and all enjoying their praise and birthday wishes. Those in attendance were treated to a delightful array of sandwiches and baked goods supplied by Rosseau Active Women (RAW) crowned with a beautiful birthday cake and a resounding rendition of Happy Birthday! The crowd was then invited to watch a beautifully prepared poignant slide presentation paying tribute to Audrey, her past, her contributions and the importance of continuing her legacy.
Then, the icing on the proverbial cake when a announcement was made that through the generosity and talents of Owen Boris and Ted Eigelshoven, Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is to realize a dream in the form of a new state of the art facility. The plans for the new building were on display for perusal and Messrs Boris and Eigelshoven were on hand to answer questions. A celebration of the past and an introduction to the future for Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. What a Day!

"Just so you know! This is the bear you will likely meet when you visit AVWS - two pictures of her! The first is Giisus, when she first arrived in 1994 - starved, skinny, moving slowly - hungry. With Nungoon, she had spent 7 years as bait - teeth knocked out, claws pulled out - to teach dogs how to hunt bears..."

Published annually by the Beacon Star, Parry Sound
"Adopt an Animal, Membership, AVWS Mission, This year's Sanctuary covergirl. Saddie is no teddy bear. Bear cubs are really cute. They remind one of teddy bears; to be cuddled and kissed and taken to bed to keep one warm on a cold winter night. Except a bear cub is not a teddy bear. It is just as cute – cuter likely – and as warm – or warmer. But it does have great sharp claws, from the day of its birth onwards. Still, Sadie was..."
