Education the Old Fashioned Way
The Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary now has a unique way of presenting our on-site educational programs. Simon and Tamara Hirsh, of Hirsh Log Homes have donated a beautifully crafted new log schoolhouse. Until now the programs were held in the top floor of our 100-year-old barn but now education will be offered in the traditional way. Fashioned by Audrey Tournay, founder and director of Aspen Valley and a retired schoolteacher herself, the schoolhouse will be widely used for seminars, presentations and all educational classes. The smell of pine fills the cathedral ceiling adding to the exciting experience for each person. We are hoping to bring back memories to those who began their education career in a one-room schoolhouse.
Nestled in the Sanctuary between the lynx and owl enclosures, the children will be able to gaze out the beautiful windows (donated by Ross Windows and Doors) to view the sanctuary surroundings. The rustic bell tower was designed and crafted by Ferncliffe Contractors of Rosseau adding the finishing touch to the new schoolhouse. Soon an authentic sign will be made by Pat Doran in the old fashioned way to complete the package.
Many plans are in the works to bring new nature and environmental educational programs to Aspen Valley to coincide with the new schoolhouse.
Huge thanks to everyone involved to make this all happen. It is truly beautiful and will be enjoyed by both young and old for many years to come.
